For me, this is the most exciting and intriguing hire BV made. I've been clamoring for years to hire a really good DL coach, who is also a great recruiter. OU has not had that in a very, very, very long time.
Overall, the defensive hires are much more interesting to me than the the offense, especially when we have most of the offensive coaches back.
Chavis has started to pique my interest. Admittedly, this is due to the personality he has shown in his tweets, but it started when I read what recruits and signees said about him. He seems to be one of the more popular coaches among recruits.
At first, I thought it strange that BV didn't hire a more experienced DE coach and one who has only held an analyst title. But then again, he was trained as a coach by BV and knows the system, so it makes perfect sense. I have no idea yet how good he will be, without seeing a single game he's coached (same for BV). I am optimistic though since I don't think BV would stake his first job as a head coach on someone he wasn't completely confident about. BV has 3 national championship rings, so I think he knows a little about how to win one.
Listening to Teddy and Gabe right now. Teddy saying there are gonna be motor issue questions from NFL evaluations on Bonitto...especially when they get to film. Yikes.
