I have been to every major at SH since Hubert Green. Not as interested this time...partly because these guys and this equipment make SH seem short. I played SH many times in the 90s and early 2000s. Great course worthy of the Open, but I guess the future courses NEED to be 8000 yards....

i've had the pleasure of playing there a few times as well and while today's tech can certainly change the intent of the design of a course, i think SH stands up to the long-ball hitters pretty well. you have to shape a lot of your shots and use quite a few of the clubs in your bag
i've seen SH make long-ball hitters pay for it many times- hopefully the course gives them fits, not really looking for big numbers by the contenders
Psalm 34:14: "Depart from evil, do good, seek peace, and pursue it."
"what deliverer could break the power of Pharaoh?"
Donβt play but have been to Southern Hills numerous times for other events, some with coach Switzer. A few friends have tickets on the course and one of them owns a home that backs up to the course and invited us over for a party on PGA Sunday. I guess that will qualify as βbeing thereβ. πππ

Only a Par 3 but I'm sure Angel Cabrera is still having nightmares of the 6th hole at Southern Hills...
was thinking that scottie scheffler was an alright guy, likable... until i listened to his PGA presser today- just a little too proud. hope he finds some humility at SH

One of my vivid memories from watching the two U S Opens at SH is seeing Jack Nicklaus chilly-dip a chip shot and take a five on a par three. It showed how ANYONE AND EVERYONE makes those little brain-fart errors.
The other thing I vividly recall is how (like all sports) a tiny change can make a huge difference - Par five dogleg left and a huge drive drifted ten inches into the rough (which was really thick fairway cut in to narrow the fairways for the open) forced a chip out and a long 3rd shot versus a very real chance to reach in two. LUCK still plays a part in all of life....
Spent the day drinking on a buddies pool deck that backs up to the course. Felt like we were being watched with the blimp and drones right over the top of us all day. ππ
